Function / Content

This series consists of charge books which record charges taken by the police at Darwin Police Station. From volume 107 (1985), the charge books are marked as Berrimah. The information recorded includes the number of the charge (using an annual single number); the date and hour of apprehension and recording charge; name and address of prisoner; age and height; calling (or occupation); nationality; religion; offence; property found on person (money and other property); signature of prisoner and witness on return of property to prisoner; signature of arresting constable and searching constable or matron; meals (BDT); If bailed (date and hour, by whom and amount of cash or surety, and bail form no.); how disposed of; name of magistrate and date; and remarks (including transfer to other police stations). Police Stations in Darwin were also located at Casuarina and Nightcliff. After 1977, the registers include name of employer; date and place of birth; details if fingerprinted and photographed; details of visits to prisoners and interviews. The date range listed for each volume is the date range by date charge was recorded. Some language used in these records (which reflects the language used at the time the records were created) may be offensive. This collection may contain references to Aboriginal people who have died, which may cause sadness and distress to their relatives. No offence has been intended by making these records available.
